Portrait: retroattack

It makes me smile when people call me Retro because they only know me by my shop's name, and I'm not particularly retro nor nostalgic nor conservative, such as worshipers of the past usually are. I am interested in products of mass culture in all ages, but I admit that half of the 20th century was particularly interesting and rich, so this is the aesthetic where I find the inspiration for my buttons.

The fact that, along with my partner, we are collectors of kitsch postcards, magazines and records of that period, is what motivated the birth of Retro Attack, to show and share all those images that fascinated us.

Me hace mucha gracia que la gente que sólo me conoce por mi tienda me llame Retro, ya que no soy una persona especialmente retro,ni nostálgica, ni conservadora, tal como suelen serlo los adoradores de otras épocas. A mí me interesan fundamentalmente los productos de la cultura de masas de todas las épocas, pero hay que reconocer que la mitad del SXX fue especialmente interesante y rica, por lo que es la estética en la que hallo la inspiración para mis buttons.

El hecho de que sea coleccionista, junto con mi pareja, de postales kitsch, revistas y discos de ese período es lo que motivó el nacimiento de Retro Attack, para dar salida de alguna forma y compartir todas esas imágenes que nos fascinaban.



I started collecting magazines when I was 16 and a neighbor had a bunch from the sixties that she wanted to get rid of. She gave them to me and I used some of the pages to line a folder with images (I think it was the first "RetroAttack" action of my life). Since then, every time I return to browse my collection, the colors, fineness and candor of those images always inspire me with new ideas.

Comencé a coleccionar revistas cuando tenía 16 años y una vecina me regaló un montón de los años 60 de las que se iba a deshacer, algunas de las que yo destripé para forrar una carpeta con imágenes (creo que fue la primera acción RetroAttack de mi vida), y ahora cada vez que vuelvo a hojear mi colección el colorido, la delicadeza y la ingenuidad de esas imágenes siempre me despiertan ideas.



Something similar happened with the postcard collection (almost 2000!) but in a different way. As they are kitsch they have an underlying lecture and are fun, I enjoy  cutting them, taking them out of context, and observe their irony.

Algo parecido ocurre con la colección de postales (casi 2000!) pero de otra manera, ya que al ser kitsch tienen una doble lectura divertida, me gusta recortárlas, descontextualizarlas, ironizar sobre ellas.



My third inspiration comes in the way of music. I have a weakness for girls vocal groups from the sixties, their innocense and the role that girlsplayed in those years are adorable.

And tremendous songs they are!

Mi tercera inspiración es la música, siento debilidad por los grupos vocales de chicas de los 60, la ingenuidad y el rol de las chicas de esa época me resultan entrañables.

Portrait: Adictaaloscomplementos

If I have to define myself in a few words, these would be: Asturian + 26 years + lover of beautiful things + restless + creative + crafter +  traveler + amateur photographer + blogger  and psychologist.

Si me tengo que definir en unas cuantas palabras, estas serian: asturiana+ 26 años+ amante de las cosas bonitas+ inquieta+ creativa+ crafter+ fotógrafa amateur+ viajera+ medio psicóloga y blogger.



My name is Noelia Castro Fernández, but I am known through the internet  as Adictaaloscomplementos for almost 4 years. Since I was little I’ve been creating  my own earrings, bracelets, necklaces …; painting and dancing... artistic expressions in general  have always attracted me and have been linked to my life.

Me llamo Noelia Castro Fernández, pero llevo por la red como Adictaaloscomplementos desde hace casi 4 años, desde siempre, desde pequeña ya me hacía mis propios pendientes, pulseras,  collares…  pintaba, hacia ballet… la expresión artística en cualquiera de sus facetas siempre me ha atraído y ha estado ligada a mi vida.



And almost by accident the craftsmanship finally materialized through Adictaaloscomplementos.

My shop is a quirky, special boutique where you can find a whole world of accessories, I try to create things that I would wear, or see my friends, my mother and of course my grandmother wearing! My things are timeless and for all ages, different and sweet, not found in stores and directed to a feminine woman, a romantic and a dreamer, a lover for details, just like me.



Hasta que casi de casualidad la parte más artesanal finalmente se materializó en Adictaaloscomplementos:

Mi tienda es un pequeño capricho, una boutique especial dónde se puede encontrar todo un mundo de complementos, intento hacer cosas que a mí me gustaría llevar, o que vea con ellas a mis amigas, a mi madre y por supuesto también a mi abuela! Mis cositas son atemporales y para todas las edades, son  piezas muy especiales y dulces, que no se encuentran en las tiendas, van dirigidas a una mujer femenina, romántica, coqueta y soñadora, amante como yo de los pequeños detalles.



I use all kinds of materials, ranging from polymer clay, felt, glass beads, pearls, wood, resin, fabric paint, to vintage ... I love vintage, pieces that carry a story, a life, I love to rescue them and give them a place on my creations. I’d like to try new materials such as plastic shrink. Being self taught I love experimenting with different techniques and materials.

Utilizo todo tipo de materiales, que van desde la arcilla polimérica, el fieltro, cuentas de cristal, perlas, madera, resinas, pintura para tela, hasta piezas vintage…  adoro lo vintage, esas piezas que llevan consigo una historia, una vida, me encanta rescatarlas y utilizarlas en mis creaciones.  También tengo ganas de probar nuevos materiales como la madera y el plástico encogible. Al ser autodidacta me gusta mucho experimentar  con diferentes técnicas y materiales.

I love beautiful things that are different, that make you feel special. Adictaaloscomplementos pieces are handmade and as such, always different from one another, no two are alike, each piece is unique as every woman is.



Me encantan las cosas bonitas y diferentes, que te hagan sentir un poquito especial sólo con llevarlas,  al tratarse de cosas hechas a mano, siguiendo procesos artesanales, los objetos de Adictaaloscomplementos siempre son diferentes unos de otros, no hay dos iguales, cada pieza es única como cada mujer.




I like to take care of every detail, from finding materials around the world, either through  hours searching online or in my travels, to the design and craftsmanship. Then comes the picture, which is also a very important part of the process, particularly selling over the Internet, it is a determining factor. I enjoy the whole process until the final step, I like to think that people smile watching the package I prepared with great care and affection, thinking it will be for someone special.

Cuido todos los detalles, desde la búsqueda de materiales por todo el mundo, ya sea durante horas a través de la red o cositas que encuentro en mis viajes. Los bocetos, el diseño, y la posterior realización artesanal de la pieza, luego viene la fotografía, que también es un parte muy importante del proceso, ya que a la hora de la venta a través de internet  es un factor decisivo. Me  lo paso genial con todo el proceso, hasta el toque final envolviendo los pedidos con un bonito y cuidado packaging, me gusta pensar que la gente sonríe al ver su paquete. Yo al menos los preparo con mucho mimo y cariño, pensando que serán para alguien muy especial.

Vanesa Lamura is a fashion designer from Buenos Aires, making  ready-to-wear designs for urban ladies all around the world. A textile version of an eye candy that you might just be lucky enough to wear.




Vanesa Lamura es una diseñadora de modas de Buenos Aires, que crea prendas para la mujer urbana de todo el mundo. Esta versión textil, toda una delicia para los ojos, que de ser afortunado, lucirás llevandolas.







I was only a girl when I started dressing my Barbie dolls when playing with my sisters. I kept on drawing and creating designs like a game all  day. When I was 18, I came to the big city to attend Fabric and Fashion Design at Buenos Aires University. Once I was graduated, I spent the following four years working as a designer for a sport company. In 1997 I was 27 years old and really felt like working on an independent project, so I finally created Vanesa Lamura.




Cuando era una niña solía jugar a las muñecas con mis hermanas y vestir a mis Barbies. Me pasaba todo el día dibujando y creando diseños a modo de juego. Cuanto cumplí 18 años, me mudé a la gran ciudad para estudiar Diseño de indumentaria en la Universidad de Buenos Aires. Una vez graduada, pasé los siguientes cuatro años trabajando en una compañía de deportes como diseñadora. En 1997, cuando tenía 27 años, sentí la necesidad de trabajar en un proyecto independiente, así que me decidí y creé Vanesa Lamura.











What inspires me is  people on the street, the street itself and most of all young people since they have no fear of combining different fabrics, colors and styles. Then I ask myself what I would like to wear for the following season and I try to imagine those clothes on my body and on my clients’ ones. Finally I start working alone in my workshop, trying to capture my ideas and translate them into my new collection.




Lo que me inspira es la gente en la calle, las calles de la ciudad en sí mismas y sobre todo la gente joven que se anima a combinar diferentes telas, colores y estilos. Después me pregunto qué me gustaría vestir en la próxima temporada y trato de imaginarme esas prendas sobre mi cuerpo y el de mis clientas. Finalmente comienzo a trabajar en mi taller, tratando de capturar las ideas y transformarlas en mi nueva colección.

Retrato: Alejandrina

Alejandrina is my name and it’s very unusual even in my country. I enjoy the idea of having a unique name, and that’s the feeling I want you to feel when walking down the street.

Mi nombre es Alejandrina y es bastante inusual en mi país, Argentina. Me gusta la idea de sentir que mi nombre es único y eso es lo que quiero que una mujer sienta mientras camina por la calle: que es única.

I started painting on canvas long time ago inspired on expressionist artists, especially on Kandinsky. Most of all, I loved the strength of the colors they used to express the meaning of "being alive". One day I wanted to experience the intensity of those bright colors on me so I imagined wearing that painting hang on the wall I feel in love with. I see blank pieces of clothes as canvas that I can convert into art work. I play with lines and contrasting colors in order to get unique clothes for unique women.

Empecé pintado sobre bastidores hace tiempo atrás, inspirada en los impresionistas y expresionistas, especialmente en Kandinsky. Amo la fuerza de los colores que usan para expresar el sentido de la vida. Un día sentí el deseo de vivir esa intensidad de colores sobre mí, así que me imaginé vistiendo alguno de esos cuadros colgados en la pared que tanto me gustaban. Para mí las prendas son como bastidores en blanco que puedo convertir en piezas de arte. Juego con líneas y colores contrastantes para crear prendas únicas para la mujer.

Trips are my source of inspiration. I try to capture the essence of any place I visit for my new collections.

Mi fuente de inspiración son los viajes. Trato de capturar la esencia del lugar que conozco para mi nueva colección.

I dream of painting a bride dress, a huge mural or the curtain of a great theatre. I think you can get a different look of the world when you see in colors.

Mi sueño es pintar un vestido de novia, un mural gigante o el telón de un teatro. Creo que el color puede generar una mirada diferente del mundo.

Retrato: Twoknit

El nombre TwoKnit representa a las dos tejedoras dueñas de la tienda: Martha Villa y su nieta Eve Neuhart. El nombre está inspirado en la cita de Shakespeare “Ser o No Ser”, que fue transformada en “Tejer o No Tejer”.

“To be, or not to be,” Shakespeare's Hamlet asked. How about “Two Knit or Knot to Knit?” This is the question for granddaughter Eve Neuhart and her grandmother Martha Villa, who started a shop called TwoKnit.

Martha comenzó a tejer con sus primos en las playas de Argentina cuando era una niña. En 1962, tratando de aumentar los ingresos para su hogar, empezó a tejer profesionalmente, y en 1964 presentó sus diseños en un espectáculo de moda en televisión. En esa época, era dueña de una tienda que tenía dos vendedoras y doce tejedoras creando sus diseños. Después de mudarse a los Estados Unidos, Martha trabajó en una pequeña boutique de Beverly Hills llamada Andrea, ubicada en Little Santa Monica y Camden. Allí creó los sombreros de ganchillo para Ali MacGraw (Love Story) y le enseñó a tejer con ganchillo a Natalie Wood cuando ésta esperaba su primer bebé. Otros clientes célebres incluyeron a Lois Clark (la esposa de James Garner), Shirley Fonda y Charo.

Martha began knitting at an early age in Argentina, as seen in the above photo with her cousins on the beach. In 1962 she began knitting professionally in an attempt to bring income to the household. This soon resulted in a TV appearance and a fashion show with her designs in 1964. At the time she had a shop with twelve knitters creating her designs and two sales reps. After moving to the states, Martha took a position at a small boutique in Beverly Hills called "Andrea’s" on little Santa Monica and Camden. This is where she created the crochet hats for Ali MacGraw (Love Story) and taught Natalie Wood to crochet when she was expecting her first baby. Martha’s other celebrity clients have included Lois Clark (James Garner's wife), Shirley Fonda and Charo.

Eve, de diecisiete años, ha sido bendecida con toda la creatividad de su familia. Algunas de las actividades favoritas de Eve incluyen la actuación, filmación, escritura, dibujo, pintura, fotografía, física cuántica, Campamento de Verano de Shakespeare y por supuesto el tejido. Lo primero que tejió Eve fue un duende de bolsillo. Luego tejió animales (corderos, leones y osos) y calcetines. Cuando Eve estaba en octavo y noveno grado, en la feria de invierno de su escuela, ella y su mejor amiga tuvieron un puesto donde vendieron sus sombreros tejidos y sus bufandas.

Eve, seventeen years of age, has been blessed by a bounty of creativity in her family. Some of Eve’s favorite activities include acting, filmmaking, writing, drawing, painting, photography, quantum physics, Shakespeare Summer camp, and of course knitting. The first knitted item that Eve created was a pocket gnome. From there she moved onto to animals (lamb, lion and a bear) and socks. While Eve was in eighth and ninth grade, she and her best friend had a booth at their school's winter fair where they sold their knitted hats and scarves.

Martha teje y hace ganchillo sentada en una silla junto a su piscina, bajo el sol de California. Roxana y Eve trabajan en sus proyectos en su casa en la montaña en Santa Mónica, que les sirve como un amplio estudio. Eve también teje en el auto yendo y viniendo de la escuela, en la escuela y mientras mira sus películas favoritas.

Martha tends to knit and crochet outside in a chair next to her swimming pool in the California sunshine. Roxana and Eve work on their projects in their Santa Monica Mountain home, which serves as a large studio space. Eve also knits in the car to and from school, at school and while watching her favorite films.
