October Birthstone: OPAL and Pink TOURMALINE

The name opal is derived from the Sanskrit word "upala," as well as the Latin "opalus," meaning "precious stone." Opal is a gemstone of much variety.

October's birthstone treats the eye to an explosion of shimmering colors, not unlike those of a magnificent rainbow following a summer rain. The Opal derives its name from the Latin word "opalus," meaning precious jewel. Prized for its unique ability to refract and reflect specific wavelengths of light, the Opal was called "Cupid Paederos" by the Romans, meaning a child beautiful as love. One legendary explanation for this gemstone's origin is that it fell from heaven in a flash of fiery lightning.

Ancient monarchs treasured Opals, both for their beauty and for their presumed protective powers. They were set into crowns and worn in necklaces to ward off evil and to protect the eyesight. These gemstones were also ground and ingested for their healing properties and to ward off nightmares.

Most of the world's Opal deposits are found in Southern Australia. Other sources of this gemstone are Brazil, Mexico, Czechoslovakia and Nevada. Quality Opal is very expensive, made more so by the caution that must be exercised in cutting, polishing and setting it into jewelry.

A gift of Opal is symbolic of faithfulness and confidence. And the powerful energy radiating from this fiery gemstone will surely illuminate any occasion!

Pink Tourmaline has the seemingly magical property of pyroelectricity. Scientifically speaking, this means that when heated, the gem takes on a static electric charge, making it capable of attracting lightweight objects. No wonder this gemstone was revered for its mystical properties centuries ago! Considered the "stone of the muse," it was believed to stimulate the creative process of its wearer. Opal se dice para mejorar el conocimiento y disipa el temor y es conocido como la piedra de octubre. Opal tambien figura como un regalo de aniversario de boda de 14. Obtiene de Opal nombre del griego trabaja «opallus», que significa un cambio en el color. Esto es evidente porque opal tiene la capacidad para reflejar las longitudes de onda de la luz de una encantadora vision. Hay diferentes colores de mas de una docena de opalos.

The deep blue of a sapphire is one of the most beloved and intriguing colors known to man, a color men have spent thousands of years searching for in every corner of earth. In ancient times, people searched for a stone that would reflect the endless blue sapphire color of the sky. So its no wonder that when they found it in the sapphire gemstone, it was named the birthstone for September. September’s birthstone, in addition to being used to symbolically represent that month, is also one of the world’s favorite gemstones for use in every kind of jewelry, including engagement rings.

The ancient Greeks believed the sapphire to symbolize wisdom and purity, and reserved them for kings and priests. They believed the world itself was set upon a giant sapphire, whose color could be seen in the late summer sky. Other ancient cultures believed sapphires could protect the wearer from envious enemies and poisoning, and even that a poisonous snake could be killed be being placed near a sapphire.

Sapphire has a high degree of mineral hardness bested only by diamond, making it durable and secure enough for use in every kind of jewelry setting. It was set as the official birthstone for September by the American National Association of Jewelers in 1912, and is also commonly used to commemorate the 5th, 23rd, and 45th wedding anniversaries. A more rate form of sapphire, the star sapphire, is used to mark the very rare and special occasion of a 65th wedding anniversary. Aunque cuando hablamos de zafiro pensamos en azul, es una gema que puede tener otros colores, puede ser incoloro, rosa, naranja, amarillo, verde, violeta y negro. Hacia 1800 se averiguó que el zafiro y el rubí representan al corindón como piedra preciosa, actualmente se llama zafiro a todos los corindones no rojos con calidad de piedra preciosa.

As a mum I often get surprised how fast our children grow and decide to exchange sim-ple and basic toys for more complicated ones.
To keep at least a memento of a long gone period I decided to up cycle a some of my son Lucas wooden building blocks, and I’ll think they’ll look lovely standing on the cupboards in his room.
Because he’s a little engineer in spe, it wasn’t difficult to choose a theme to “dress up” the blocks, you are free to use your imagination to make yours!

Siendo madre de dos niños muchas veces me quedo sorprendida de la rapidez en que crecen y dejan sus juguetes simples y básicos para cambiar-los por otros muchos más complicados.

Para guardar por lo menos un recuerdo de los períodos que han pasado he decicido re-usar algunos de los bloques de madera de mi hijo Lucas para luego ponerlos de adorno en su habitación.

Como ya tiene tendencias de ingeniero, no me ha sido difícil elegir un tema para adornar los bloques, ustedes son libres de elegir tema propio, por su puesto!

It makes me smile when people call me Retro because they only know me by my shop's name, and I'm not particularly retro nor nostalgic nor conservative, such as worshipers of the past usually are. I am interested in products of mass culture in all ages, but I admit that half of the 20th century was particularly interesting and rich, so this is the aesthetic where I find the inspiration for my buttons.

The fact that, along with my partner, we are collectors of kitsch postcards, magazines and records of that period, is what motivated the birth of Retro Attack, to show and share all those images that fascinated us.

Me hace mucha gracia que la gente que sólo me conoce por mi tienda me llame Retro, ya que no soy una persona especialmente retro,ni nostálgica, ni conservadora, tal como suelen serlo los adoradores de otras épocas. A mí me interesan fundamentalmente los productos de la cultura de masas de todas las épocas, pero hay que reconocer que la mitad del SXX fue especialmente interesante y rica, por lo que es la estética en la que hallo la inspiración para mis buttons.

El hecho de que sea coleccionista, junto con mi pareja, de postales kitsch, revistas y discos de ese período es lo que motivó el nacimiento de Retro Attack, para dar salida de alguna forma y compartir todas esas imágenes que nos fascinaban.

I started collecting magazines when I was 16 and a neighbor had a bunch from the sixties that she wanted to get rid of. She gave them to me and I used some of the pages to line a folder with images (I think it was the first "RetroAttack" action of my life). Since then, every time I return to browse my collection, the colors, fineness and candor of those images always inspire me with new ideas.

Comencé a coleccionar revistas cuando tenía 16 años y una vecina me regaló un montón de los años 60 de las que se iba a deshacer, algunas de las que yo destripé para forrar una carpeta con imágenes (creo que fue la primera acción RetroAttack de mi vida), y ahora cada vez que vuelvo a hojear mi colección el colorido, la delicadeza y la ingenuidad de esas imágenes siempre me despiertan ideas.

Something similar happened with the postcard collection (almost 2000!) but in a different way. As they are kitsch they have an underlying lecture and are fun, I enjoy cutting them, taking them out of context, and observe their irony.

My third inspiration comes in the way of music. I have a weakness for girls vocal groups from the sixties, their innocense and the role that girlsplayed in those years are adorable.

And tremendous songs they are!

I use all kinds of materials, ranging from polymer clay, felt, glass beads, pearls, wood, resin, fabric paint, to vintage ... I love vintage, pieces that carry a story, a life, I love to rescue them and give them a place on my creations. I’d like to try new materials such as plastic shrink. Being self taught I love experimenting with different techniques and materials.

Utilizo todo tipo de materiales, que van desde la arcilla polimérica, el fieltro, cuentas de cristal, perlas, madera, resinas, pintura para tela, hasta piezas vintage… adoro lo vintage, esas piezas que llevan consigo una historia, una vida, me encanta rescatarlas y utilizarlas en mis creaciones. También tengo ganas de probar nuevos materiales como la madera y el plástico encogible. Al ser autodidacta me gusta mucho experimentar con diferentes técnicas y materiales.

I like to take care of every detail, from finding materials around the world, either through hours searching online or in my travels, to the design and craftsmanship. Then comes the picture, which is also a very important part of the process, particularly selling over the Internet, it is a determining factor. I enjoy the whole process until the final step, I like to think that people smile watching the package I prepared with great care and affection, thinking it will be for someone special.

The “Museo de Arte Popular José Hernández“, Buenos Aires, proposed a call for entries: to create a piece of art inspired by a popular legend. Searching through my hometown legends I found the bizarre story of Belek which captivated me and I couldn’t help but to give it a shape.

El Museo de Arte Popular José Hernández, de Buenos Aires, propuso una convocatoria. ¿Cuál era? Crear una pieza de artesanía inspirada en alguna leyenda popular. Buscando en las leyendas de mi ciudad apareció la bizarra historia de Belek que me cautivó y no pude dejar de plasmarla.

Belek, the vampire - Belek, el vampiro de Buenos Aires

The Belek’s legend begins when a Russian circus established in the “Bajo Flores” neighborhood, in Buenos Aires, to offer their shows. Belek was one of the dwarves who were working at the circus. Neighbors tell that during this time a lot of chickens and other animals began to disappear. They didn’t know what could be the reason of these events, until the night when Belek, the dwarf was found biting the neck of a monkey. The owner of the circus, instead of sending him to justice, decided as punishment, to leave behind Belek in the “Bajo Flores” neighborhood and left with the circus.

El mito de Belek comienza cuando un circo proveniente de Rusia se instala en el Bajo Flores a dar sus funciones. Belek era uno de los enanos que trabajaba en dicho circo. Cuentan los vecinos del lugar que durante ese tiempo empezaron a desaparecer gallinas y otros animales del lugar. No se sabía cuál podía ser la razón hasta que una noche encontraron a Belek mordiendo el cuello de una mona tití. El dueño del circo, en vez de enviarlo a la justicia, decide partir con el circo y como castigo dejar solo a Belek en el Bajo Flores.

The real horror came about after Belek took refuge in a semi abandoned house and the cats of the neighborhood began to disappear mysteriously.

Legend tells that people started to protect their houses with strings of garlic and everybody started to wear crucifixes to prevent Belek’s attack.

One winter night, neighbors hunted the midget vampire with the net of a soccer goal near the “Flores” train station, but Belek managed to escape.
People now assure that he is still living at the “Flores” cemetery doing what he has been known for.
Is Belek still wandering the bustling streets of Buenos Aires at nights?

Pero el verdadero horror se desató cuando Belek se refugió en una casa semi abandonada y los gatos del barrio comenzaron a desaparecer misteriosamente.

La leyenda cuenta que la gente protegió sus casas con ristras de ajo y todos llevaban crucifijos por miedo a sus ataques.

Una noche de invierno, los hombres del barrio cazaron al enano vampiro con la red de un arco de fútbol, cerca de la estación Flores, pero se les escapó.

Aseguran que aún vive en el cementerio de Flores y sigue haciendo de las suyas.

¿Continúa quizás Belek deambulando por las calles bulliciosas de la noche de Buenos Aires?

Siempre he vivido aquí. Me encanta porque me encantan las ciudades, y porque Madrid tiene un poco de todo. Arte, tiendas, parques, gente super amable....

- How and when did you started creating your jewelry?

I started in 2009, well, actually, I started earlier.
In fact, I've always been doing things manually.
When I was a child I was the best of my class making knots bracelets. I liked to draw, cut, assemble and disassemble.
My father is a sculptor, so I guess that was a major influence on me, I don't know. Maybe it has to do with the genes, because now I watch my children and they are not athletes, but love crafts instead.
It happens that life can take you through different pathways.
I started my career in architecture here in Spain, which lasted 6 very hard years; so during that period everything else froze. Everything became blue prints, flat structures, installations ..... and crafts were a bit neglected.
It took several years for handmade to return to my life.
And then, I'm not sure why, I suddenly started again, and from then on things went very fast. I found Etsy and discovered via Internet lots of places and super interesting and inspiring people. And here I am now.
Today much of my time revolves around handmade.

- ¿Cuándo y como empezaste a crear tu joyería?

Pues empecé en el año 2009, bueno nó, empecé antes.
En realidad siempre he estado haciendo cosas manuales.
De pequeña era la reina de la clase haciendo pulseritas de nudos. Me gustaba dibujar, recortar, montar y desmontar.
Mi padre es escultor, así que supongo que era una influencia importante, no sé, o serán los genes, porque ahora mis hijos veo que tampoco son muy deportistas que digamos, y en cambio les encantan las manualidades.
Lo que ocurre es que la vida te va llevando por otros caminos.
Empecé la carrera de arquitectura, que aquí en España (y sobre todo cuando yo empecé, que duraba 6 años) es una carrera muy dura, y todo lo demás se paralizó. Todo se volvieron planos, estructuras, instalaciones..... y las manualidades quedaron un poco relegadas.
Han hecho falta bastantes años para que volvieran a mi vida.
No sé muy bien por qué pero de repente empecé de nuevo y todo fue muy rápido. Encontré Etsy, descubrí en internet, un montón de sitios y de personas super interesantes y super inspiradoras, y aquí estoy.
Ahora gran parte de mi tiempo gira en torno al handmade.

- How is your creative process, what inspires you?

I'm not sure...I don't have much time to stop and think.
I believe that inspiration is around your life. It's what you do every day, what you see, what you eat, the music you listen to.
I am lucky to work as an architect with two partners, who are my best friends, so it's a very fun atmosphere. We talk, we laugh.
I live in the center of Madrid and my brain constantly receives information from windows, people, landscapes, that are inspiring.
And I have two small children (3 and 6 years) who keep me fresh, awake and active .
I do a lot of shopping, constantly looking for beads, ribbons, chains.
And I have to be careful, because I like them too much and can spend too much.
Then I sit at my table with all these treasures, and without knowing how, things work out by themselves.

- ¿Cómo es tu proceso creativo? ¿Qué es lo que te inspira?

Pues no sé muy bien.
No tengo mucho tiempo para pararme a pensar.
Creo que la inspiración es tu vida. Es lo que haces cada día, lo que ves, lo que comes, la musica que escuchas.
Tengo la suerte de trabajar como arquitecta con dos socios, que son mis mejores amigos y por tanto con un ambiente muy divertido. Hablamos, nos reimos.
Y ademas vivo en el centro de Madrid y continuamente mi cerebro recibe información de escaparates, de personas, de paisajes, que son inspiradores.
Y mis hijos, que son pequeños (3 y 6 años) y me hacen tener la mente abierta, despierta y activa.
Lo que sí que hago es buscar, buscar y buscar cuentas, cintas, cadenas.
Y tengo que tener cuidado, porque me gustan demasiado y lo compraría todo.
Luego me siento en mi mesa con todas esas preciosidades, y sin saber como, las cosas salen solas.

- Do you sell your jewelry at any other place than Etsy?

I just opened an e-store at artesanio which is a similar platform as Etsy but based in Spain.
I also sell to stores in Madrid.

- ¿Vendes tus creaciones en algún otro lugar aparte de Etsy?

Pues acabo de abrir una tienda en artesanio que es una plataforma como Etsy pero en España.
También venden mis cosas en algunas tiendas en Madrid.

- Do you have any other activity?

I have my architecture studio.
These times are not the best, as nothing is going too great in Spain, but we have never ceased to work.
It's a very creative and very interesting work. I think it is closely related to art and somehow to handmade.

- ¿Tienes alguna otra actividad?

Lo que os contaba antes.
Tengo un estudio de Arquitectura.
Ahora no es el mejor momento, porque las cosas en España no van bien para nadie, pero nunca hemos dejado de tener trabajo.
Es un trabajo muy creativo y muy interesante. Yo creo que tambien muy relacionado con el arte y con las mismas cosas que el handmade.

My name is Kristina and I am a children's book illustrator. I was born in Lithuania but I reside in a town in Galicia, Spain with my husband and Chino, our dog.

Me llamo Kristina y soy ilustradora de libros infantiles. Soy de Lituania, pero vivo en un pueblo de Galicia con mi marido y nuestro perro Chino.

From the time I was very little I felt attracted to arts and crafts since my grandmother was an Art Teacher. So I am very happy to be earning my living with what I love, sharing my positive and colorful vision as well as showing my view of the world and transmitting my message through art.

Desde muy pequeña me sentí identificada con el arte y también las manualidades, ya que mi abuela era profesora de esta disciplina. Así que ahora estoy muy feliz de vivir de lo que realmente me gusta y compartir mi visión colorista y positiva con la gente. I am a person that loves activity and being busy. My passion is making jewelry during my free time and I've been doing it for a long time. I really enjoy it and it's very relaxing for me.

Soy una persona que siempre me gusta estar activa y estar haciendo algo. Mi pasión es hacer joyería en mis tiempos libres. Ya tengo varios años haciendo diseños de joyería, ya que me encanta y sobretodo me relaja mucho.

I really love delicate, different, natural, and simple stuff so most of my designs have these qualities. I am an understanding and realistic person, and what I really want is for all my customers to be 100% satisfied with my jewelry. I try hard to realize the customers requests and so far everyone has been very happy with my job.

A mi me gusta mucho lo delicado, exquisito, natural, y simple, y así son la mayoría de mis diseños. También soy una persona muy comprensiva y realista, y lo que mas me gusta y quiero es que mis clientes estén 100% satisfechas con mi joyería. Siempre trato de cumplir los gustos de todas ella, y creo que ellas están realmente muy satisfechas con mi trabajo.

This is one of my favorite rings:
A sterling silver wire wrapped ring with freshwater pearls and Swarovski crystals. This ring is really feminine and romantic, it is ideal for any occasion and I am pretty sure any girl will look beautiful wearing it.

Aquí, estoy presentando uno de mis anillos favoritos;
Anillo envuelto con alambre de plata y sosteniéndose desde ahí, alambres de plata con perlas de agua fresca y cristales. Es un anillo realmente muy femenino y romántico, ideal para cualquier ocasión y con el cual cualquier chica luciría muy hermosa.

I started making the base ring with sterling silver wire, making loops for the beads. From the loops I attached freshwater pearls and Swarovski crystals which were themselves previously wire wrapped, once they are attached to the ring the look is very voluminous. Any kind of beads, pearls, crystals, or stones may be used as long as they are in small sizes so the ring doesn't become too heavy.

Para hacer este anillo, primero tuve que hacer la base del anillo con aros para ahí colocar y envolver todos los alambres necesarios para que luzca voluminoso. Se puede agregar cualquier tipo de perlas, cristales, o piedras, claro siempre siendo de un tamaño pequeño para que no pese mucho el anillo.

These designs are striking and unique…my customers have really loved them.

Estos diseños con muy llamativos y únicos… a mis clientes les han encantado.

I wanted to share the inside look of my studio and my work in progress. I wanted to invite you into my little space where I get inspired. But to be honest, dualchocolate’s studio goes from the corner of my kitchen table all the way to the living room, and in many occasions it includes my car. Yes, at this point my studio has taken over my house and nearby spaces. The ideas are wherever I go, just the same as those extra pair of curious little hands who follow every move, help blurring every other photo, and play with my tools!

Getting any project up and going is remarkable, and getting it done is a real prowess.

Lately I’ve been getting so excited with the mail delivery, my two latest arrivals: a little box with paints and tokens _ oh the adventure lies ahead_ and the colorful brochure for my xocolate bears.

Happy with every detail and the array of colors; and with the endless possibilities that are brought by every new project, by a blank notebook, a white canvas, and the early evening full of surprises!

Ubicar mi taller es todo un trabajo en proceso, dejarles mirar mi rinconcito de inspiración, no es tan sencillo como disparar el lente. La verdad es que el taller dualchocolate es ir de la mesa de la cocina hasta la sala, y en muchas ocasiones el anexo incluye y continúa a mi auto. Sí, a estas alturas el taller se ha tomado toda la casa y alrededores. Nos persiguen las ideas y también las manos traviesas de mi peque que no dejan fotografía intacta ni herramienta sin querer tocar.

Lograr iniciar cualquier proyecto es todo un evento, terminarlo ya es toda una hazaña. Recibimos pequeñas entregas del correo con emoción, pues son agradables sorpresas. Les comparto las dos mas reciente: cajita con pinturitas y moneditas la aventura queda pendiente para nuestros dedos y las manos traviesas que nos siguen a todas partes. Felices con tanto detalle, tanto color y las posibilidades que lleva un cuaderno en blanco, un lienzo sin marcar, la tarde que llega como cada nuevo proyecto.

My name is Lorena, I'm a Mexican industrial designer and jeweler, currently living in the beautiful city of flowers and canals, Amsterdam.

Hola! Me llamo Lorena, soy una diseñadora industrial y joyera mexicana, viviendo actualmente en la hermosa ciudad de las flores y los canales, Amsterdam.

- When and how did you start creating your jewelry and your illustrations?

While I was studying my career I designed fashion accessories with silver threads, crystals and beads, later I worked for a fine jewelry company designing pieces on the computer; there, I watched the jewelers at their benches working with fire, hammers and their bunch of tools, materializing my own designs.
In 2008 I got married and moved to Buenos Aires (my husband is Argentinian). There I studied Jewelry at Escuela de la Joya Sergio Lukez, and from that moment on I couldn't stop designing and fabricating jewelry, it's my passion!
I also make illustrations, it's a hobby that I enjoy and that helps me distract myself when making a piece of jewelery is giving me too many problems.

- ¿Cuándo y como empezaste a crear tu joyería e ilustraciones ?

Mientras estudiaba la carrera hacía accesorios de moda con hilos de plata, cristales y piedritas, después trabajé para una casa de joyería fina diseñando piezas por computadora, ahí observaba fascinada a los joyeros que desde su banco trabajaban con fuego, martillos y su infinidad de herramientas materializando mis diseños.
En el 2008 me case y me fui a vivir a Buenos Aires (mi esposo es argentino), ahí estudié el oficio de joyería en la Escuela de la Joya Sergio Lukez, y desde ese momento no he parado de diseñar y hacer joyería, es algo que me apasiona totalmente!
A la par también hago ilustraciones, que es un pasatiempo que disfruto mucho y que me ayuda a distraerme cuando alguna joya me da mucha pelea.

- Tell us about your creative process. What inspires you?

Many things boost my imagination!
My Mexican roots (Quetzal and Cactus collections), geometry and graphic design (199 Carats), my trips (9 things series illustrations), As an example, my Lingerie Collection was the product of the cultural shock that produced in me the Red Light District in Amsterdam, the concept of what you show, what you hide, the secrets... it ended up in a series of sexy and delicate pieces that can be showed with no problem.

My creative process generally follows these steps:
*Choosing a subject or image that catches my attention.
* Analyzing that inspiration, taking notes, drawing many sketches!
* Selecting the best ideas, making the technical drawings.
* Making models in paper, nickel-silver or on the computer.
* Making the corrections needed for those models
* Documenting everything in my ¨Process Diary" and making the pieces in sterling silver!
There are some pieces, like the Cactus collection, which are the product of playing and experimenting with materials without any specific premeditated plan.

- ¿Cómo es tu proceso creativo? ¿Qué es lo que te inspira?

Muchísimas cosas me inspiran...
Mis raíces mexicanas (colección Quetzal y Cactus), la geometría y el diseño gráfico (199 Carats), mis viajes (ilustraciones 9 thing series) y por ejemplo la colección Lingerie fue producto del choque cultural que produjo en mi la zona roja de Amsterdam, el concepto de lo que uno muestra u oculta, lo secreto… terminó convirtiéndose en una línea de piezas sensuales y delicadas que pueden llevarse a la vista sin ningún problema jajaja.

Mi proceso creativo en general sigue estos pasos:
* Elegir algun tema o imágen que llama mi atención
* Analizar esa inspiración, hacer anotaciones y muchos bocetos!
* Seleccionar las mejores ideas, dibujarlas en detalle.
* Hacer maquetas en papel, alpaca o por computadora.
* Hacer correcciones sobre esas maquetas
* Documentar todo en mi diario de "procesos" y realizar las piezas en plata!

Y hay otras piezas, como las de "Cactus" que son producto de experimentar y jugar con materiales sin un plan definido.

- Do you sell your creations anywhere other than Etsy?

I also have shops at DaWanda and Supermarket. And I'm planning to launch my own website this year!

- ¿Vendes tus creaciones en algún otro lugar aparte de Etsy?

También tengo una tienda en DaWanda y en Supermarket, y este año planeo lanzar mi propio sitio!.

- Any other particular thing you do?

I love traveling! Living in Amsterdam we love to take advantage of any opportunity to escape and discover new places (distances are very short!)
I also like reading, cooking, visiting museums... and I love studying and learning new things, for example now I'll start learning dutch!

- ¿Tienes alguna otra actividad?
Me gusta mucho viajar!, ahora que vivo en Amsterdam aprovechamos cualquier oportunidad para escaparnos a conocer algún lugar nuevo (las distancias son tan pequeñas!)
También me gusta leer, cocinar, visitar museos... y me encanta estudiar y aprender cosas nuevas, por ejemplo ahora empezaré con el idioma holandés!

Now that the warm weather arrived and we have good light, I will show you how I make my beads beaded necklaces.

Ahora que llega el buen tiempo y hay buena luz, os voy a contar como hago mis collares de beaded beads.

At first this one was going to be a dining table, but I ended up taking the area as work space. Good lighting, a white surface (that's the cloth I use, not that I have a cold) and my boxes of seed beads. And a very fresh coca-cola!

En un principio esta iba a ser una mesa para comer, pero he acabado tomando la zona como espacio de trabajo. Buena luz, una superficie blanca (eso es el pañuelo, no es que esté resfriada) y mis cajas de abalorios. Y una coca-cola bien fresquita.

The first thing is always to wring out all the seed beads and spread them on the table, this is the most fun. I love making beaded beads because of the myriad of colors there are, that makes the combinations endless and amazing.
The best way to choose the colors is to spread the beads on a white cloth, so you can see more clearly, and once selected, I put the colored threads in a row at their side.

Lo primero siempre es sacar todos los abalorios del color elegido y extenderlos por la mesa, es lo más divertido, me encanta hacer beaded beads por la infinidad de colores que hay, eso hace que las combinaciones sean innumerables y sorprendentes.
Lo mejor para elegir los colores es colocarlos sobre una tela blanca, así se ven con mayor claridad, y una vez seleccionados pongo los hilos en fila a su lado.

At this moment we can add the wood beads and the crayons, I prefer to paint the wood as it adds nuances to the final result. When the process of painting the wood is finished, I always end up with colored fingertips!!!

En este momento añadimos las bolas de madera y los rotuladores, me gusta darles color a la madera, eso da matices al resultado final, crea reflejos y tonalidades. Y después de la fase de pintar la madera siempre acabo con las yemas de los dedos de colores!!!

Now to the sewing. With patience and care I sew the beads one by one using the technique called peyote stitch. I do not use a thimble because it causes the beads to slip and fly away from my hands, and always, always, always land under the couch, as if responding to the laws of physics. That makes me push the needle into my fingers from time to time, but it keeps me alert!

Ahora ya solo queda coser, con paciencia y cuidado coso los abalorios uno a uno usando la técnica del peyote stitch. Yo no uso dedal por que me resbalan las beaded beads y vuelan de mis manos, y siempre, siempre, siempre acaban debajo del sofá, es como una ley física, y eso hace que me clave la aguja de vez en cuando, pero así me mantengo alerta!!

When I finish the beaded beads, I like to display them in a row before giving the final approval. Sometimes I mix random colored beads and place them in jars, they are like colored candies. Now it's time to put on the table the clasps and chains and find the combination that works best.

Cuando las acabo me gusta ponerlas en fila y darles el aprobado final. A veces las hago de colores aleatorios y las meto en tarros, son como caramelos de colores. Es el momento de poner sobre la mesa cierres y cadenas y buscar la combinación que le va mejor.

And this is the final result!

I've finished my coke and all that remains is putting everything back in their boxes and clear the table!

Ya he acabado mi coca-cola y lo único que queda es volver a colocarlo todo en sus caja y volver a despejar la mesa!!!

Today I'd like to show you step by step, the process of fabricating one of the pieces that I enjoyed working on.

Hoy me gustaría enseñaros el proceso de fabricación y explicaros un poco el paso a paso de una de las piezas en la que más me ha gustado trabajar.

1.- It starts with the making of 6 sterling silver caps, which are filed and soldered facing each other to form 3 hollow balls.

2.- Once soldered, a hole is drilled through, with a round drill.

3.- Square wire pieces are rolled with a rolling mill in a way so that they gradually become wider on one end than the other. For this a file may also be used. The tentacles are shaped using tongs.

4.- Once the wires have the desired shape, they are soldered to the hollow balls.

1.- Se preparan 6 casquillas de Plata, se liman y se sueldan unas frente a otras para formar 3 bolas huecas.

2.- Una vez soldadas se taladran y se abre el agujero con una fresa redonda.

3.- A partir de un perfil cuadrado de Plata se preparan hilos laminándolos en degradado de forma que queden más anchos por abajo que por arriba. También podemos utilizar una lima. Con ayuda de unas tenazas se les da la forma a modo de tentáculos.

4.- Cuando tengamos los hilos con la forma deseada se sueldan a las bolas huecas.

5.- A circle of silver is cut, and shaped with a dapping block obtaining a cap.

6.- Filing the base of the cap, then soldering the tentacles on the top.

7. - Holes are drilled on the base and opened with the help of different sized burs.

8.- Silver wire is used to thread woven balls, they are prepared to go soldered at each side of the base.

5.- Se corta un círculo de Plata y se le da forma con un tas de embutir hasta conseguir una casquilla.

6.- Se lima la base de la casquilla y se sueldan los tentáculos en la parte superior.

7.- Con una broca se marca y se taladra la base; y con la ayuda de fresas de distintos tamaños abrimos los taladros.

8.- Con hilo de Plata se preparan unas bolas entretejidas que irán soldadas en unos de los laterales de la base.

9.- A silver sheet is cut into a flower shape, with the help of the dapping block. A wire topped with a silver ball is soldered in the center.

10 to 11.- A silver sheet is prepared to be used as a base for all the parts. Everything is placed and soldered. Once soldered, it is checked and then sawed around leaving a small margin.

12.- A thick silver wire is prepared to become the ring. The ends are filed and it is shaped and sized as desired.

9.- A partir de una plancha de Plata se corta la forma de una flor a la que se le da forma con la ayuda del tas de embutir y las tenazas. En el centro se suelda un hilo rematado en una bola de plata.

10 - 11. - Se prepara una plancha de plata que servirá de base para todas las piezas. Se coloca todo el conjunto y se suelda. Una vez soldado se comprueba que esté correcto y con una segueta se recorta alrededor de la base dejando un pequeño margen.

12.- Se prepara un hilo de plata grueso para el anillo. Se liman los extremos para redondearlos y se le da la forma y la talla deseada.

13 - 14 - 15 - 16 .- Once the ring is ready, it is soldered to the piece. A file is use to smooth the edges and the final piece is cleaned. Last, the oxidization process, some parts are brushed to obtain contrast with the oxidized silver, and it’s ready.

13 - 14 - 15 - 16.- Una vez listo el anillo lo soldamos a la pieza. Con una lima se repasan las soldaduras y se blanquea. Por último se le aplica el óxido, se resaltan algunas partes para que contrasten con la plata oxidada y ya está listo.

Under a Newlight’s inpirations

Under New Light’s inspirations come from all sides. It ‘s influenced by beautiful poems, song lyrics, photography, festive colors that are typically found in the indigenous clothing of my home country Peru, sunny beaches, and ethnic cultures, such as Tibetan and Native Americans, that I discovered in other countries where I’ve lived. I’m inspired by memories of a place, experiences from my hometown or maybe from where I spent or am spending part of my life. Going a little further, I like geometric forms and using elementary geometry studies. One never truly knows, but our creations evolve and change as we grow.

The things that recently inspired me were the beautiful memories of holiday seasons in Nanjing, China. The Chinese usually decorate their houses and streets with beautiful art of hand-cut paper. I like combining this hand-cut style on leather with a touch of geometric principle, or with a glimpse of nature.

Below is the beautiful paper cuts that can be found in China. They’re habitually seen during the Spring festival.

Las inspiraciones de Under a New Light llegan por todos lados, estan influenciados en bellos poemas, letras de canciones, la fotografia, los colores festivos de mi cultura reflejados en los colores de vestimentas indigenas de mi tierra Peru, las playas soleadas, la cultura etnica del pais donde he vivido me apego bastante al tibet y a los nativos americanos. El recuerdo de un lugar, las vivencias en mi ciudad natal o tal vez los lugares donde he pasado y estoy pasando parte de mi vida. Llendo un poco mas lejos a formas geometricas, estudios de geometria elemental, y uno nunca sabe verdaremente. Las creaciones evolucionan y las inspiraciones cambian asi como crecemos.

Lo ultimo en que me he inspirado son en los bellos recuerdos de temporadas festivas en Nanjing-China, en las decoraciones que habitualmente los chinos ponen en sus casas y en sus calles con los bellos arte de papel cortado a mano, Me gusta combinar este tecnica en cuero con un pequeno principio geometrico, o asociandolo a la naturaleza.

Abajo les muestro los maravillosos cortes de papel en China, que habitulmente los he visto en sus festival de primavera.

Holiday Season Worked Havoc with international parcels

Yes, this holiday season has brought to our shops and our customers a great deal of confusion and disappointment that has carried over to the New Year. It has tested our well developed resourcefulness in and out of Etsy. It has and is continuously challenging our hard-earned reputation as Etsy sellers.

We are writing on behalf of the entire EsEtsy team. We want to be reassured of Etsy's support in this matter, for each individual Etsy seller in our team, who has come but too often for help, advise and answers, is doubting Etsy's willingness to side with us sellers.

Our shops have come with a list of international customers, who are mainly located in the USA, and their claims/ reports of non delivery, their threats for negative feedback, their reports on paypal, their back and forth convos for updates about packages/ orders that have not yet arrived.

During the holiday rush Etsy did publish an article that mentioned the delay in packages delivery, asking for extra patience while waiting for the order, and advising to purchase insurance and to mail with a tracking number (this information in many cases has not been updated properly during this season). This was a topic and a road all too familiar for shops housed abroad (out of the USA), which mailed out orders from purchases as early as November 2010.

These unforeseen delays, with tighten security due to terrorist threats and postal services regulations which tempt to vary from border to border, added to the usual expected time of delivery on regular packages.

For customers already in the peak of the holiday shopping anxiety, this article did not make sense (especially the Etsy newcomers and first timers). For many buyers the delay is just an unacceptable factor, not taking into consideration that the seller has no control over the package while in transit, that the delay is an Etsy wide catastrophe, that is not a particular seller's wrong doing-not in this case-!

We are left with two certainties from all this: that Etsy needs to pronounce itself standing by each seller -reviewing each case, because each case is one of a kind- and lacking this so far is adding up to our disadvantage. And that this will render us an infamous negative feedback, too many to keep running an up to now successful Etsy shop.

We feel our shops are in danger, we feel the need from Etsy to back us up in a consistent way in order to be able to confront this unfortunate situation successfully and keep doing our business that we love.

I was only a girl when I started dressing my Barbie dolls when playing with my sisters. I kept on drawing and creating designs like a game all day. When I was 18, I came to the big city to attend Fabric and Fashion Design at Buenos Aires University. Once I was graduated, I spent the following four years working as a designer for a sport company. In 1997 I was 27 years old and really felt like working on an independent project, so I finally created Vanesa Lamura.

Cuando era una niña solía jugar a las muñecas con mis hermanas y vestir a mis Barbies. Me pasaba todo el día dibujando y creando diseños a modo de juego. Cuanto cumplí 18 años, me mudé a la gran ciudad para estudiar Diseño de indumentaria en la Universidad de Buenos Aires. Una vez graduada, pasé los siguientes cuatro años trabajando en una compañía de deportes como diseñadora. En 1997, cuando tenía 27 años, sentí la necesidad de trabajar en un proyecto independiente, así que me decidí y creé Vanesa Lamura.

What inspires me is people on the street, the street itself and most of all young people since they have no fear of combining different fabrics, colors and styles. Then I ask myself what I would like to wear for the following season and I try to imagine those clothes on my body and on my clients’ ones. Finally I start working alone in my workshop, trying to capture my ideas and translate them into my new collection.

Lo que me inspira es la gente en la calle, las calles de la ciudad en sí mismas y sobre todo la gente joven que se anima a combinar diferentes telas, colores y estilos. Después me pregunto qué me gustaría vestir en la próxima temporada y trato de imaginarme esas prendas sobre mi cuerpo y el de mis clientas. Finalmente comienzo a trabajar en mi taller, tratando de capturar las ideas y transformarlas en mi nueva colección.

Alejandrina is my name and it’s very unusual even in my country. I enjoy the idea of having a unique name, and that’s the feeling I want you to feel when walking down the street.

Mi nombre es Alejandrina y es bastante inusual en mi país, Argentina. Me gusta la idea de sentir que mi nombre es único y eso es lo que quiero que una mujer sienta mientras camina por la calle: que es única.

I started painting on canvas long time ago inspired on expressionist artists, especially on Kandinsky. Most of all, I loved the strength of the colors they used to express the meaning of "being alive". One day I wanted to experience the intensity of those bright colors on me so I imagined wearing that painting hang on the wall I feel in love with. I see blank pieces of clothes as canvas that I can convert into art work. I play with lines and contrasting colors in order to get unique clothes for unique women.

Empecé pintado sobre bastidores hace tiempo atrás, inspirada en los impresionistas y expresionistas, especialmente en Kandinsky. Amo la fuerza de los colores que usan para expresar el sentido de la vida. Un día sentí el deseo de vivir esa intensidad de colores sobre mí, así que me imaginé vistiendo alguno de esos cuadros colgados en la pared que tanto me gustaban. Para mí las prendas son como bastidores en blanco que puedo convertir en piezas de arte. Juego con líneas y colores contrastantes para crear prendas únicas para la mujer.

Trips are my source of inspiration. I try to capture the essence of any place I visit for my new collections.

I dream of painting a bride dress, a huge mural or the curtain of a great theatre. I think you can get a different look of the world when you see in colors.

El nombre TwoKnit representa a las dos tejedoras dueñas de la tienda: Martha Villa y su nieta Eve Neuhart. El nombre está inspirado en la cita de Shakespeare “Ser o No Ser”, que fue transformada en “Tejer o No Tejer”.

“To be, or not to be,” Shakespeare's Hamlet asked. How about “Two Knit or Knot to Knit?” This is the question for granddaughter Eve Neuhart and her grandmother Martha Villa, who started a shop called TwoKnit.

Martha comenzó a tejer con sus primos en las playas de Argentina cuando era una niña. En 1962, tratando de aumentar los ingresos para su hogar, empezó a tejer profesionalmente, y en 1964 presentó sus diseños en un espectáculo de moda en televisión. En esa época, era dueña de una tienda que tenía dos vendedoras y doce tejedoras creando sus diseños. Después de mudarse a los Estados Unidos, Martha trabajó en una pequeña boutique de Beverly Hills llamada Andrea, ubicada en Little Santa Monica y Camden. Allí creó los sombreros de ganchillo para Ali MacGraw (Love Story) y le enseñó a tejer con ganchillo a Natalie Wood cuando ésta esperaba su primer bebé. Otros clientes célebres incluyeron a Lois Clark (la esposa de James Garner), Shirley Fonda y Charo.

Martha began knitting at an early age in Argentina, as seen in the above photo with her cousins on the beach. In 1962 she began knitting professionally in an attempt to bring income to the household. This soon resulted in a TV appearance and a fashion show with her designs in 1964. At the time she had a shop with twelve knitters creating her designs and two sales reps. After moving to the states, Martha took a position at a small boutique in Beverly Hills called "Andrea’s" on little Santa Monica and Camden. This is where she created the crochet hats for Ali MacGraw (Love Story) and taught Natalie Wood to crochet when she was expecting her first baby. Martha’s other celebrity clients have included Lois Clark (James Garner's wife), Shirley Fonda and Charo.

Eve, de diecisiete años, ha sido bendecida con toda la creatividad de su familia. The first knitted item that Eve created was a pocket gnome. From there she moved onto to animals (lamb, lion and a bear) and socks. While Eve was in eighth and ninth grade, she and her best friend had a booth at their school's winter fair where they sold their knitted hats and scarves.

Martha teje y hace ganchillo sentada en una silla junto a su piscina, bajo el sol de California. Roxana y Eve trabajan en sus proyectos en su casa en la montaña en Santa Mónica, que les sirve como un amplio estudio. Eve también teje en el auto yendo y viniendo de la escuela, en la escuela y mientras mira sus películas favoritas.

Martha tends to knit and crochet outside in a chair next to her swimming pool in the California sunshine. Roxana and Eve work on their projects in their Santa Monica Mountain home, which serves as a large studio space. Eve also knits in the car to and from school, at school and while watching her favorite films.

Los favoritos en Etsy se marcan y se contabilizan por corazones.

Como en Etsy conoces y reconoces talento y popularidad. Un campo muy reñido.
Los corazones en Etsy también funcionan como un recordatorio para regresar a darte una vuelta y descubrir nuevos artículos.
Como funciona:
Al marcar un producto o una tienda das un corazón, pulsando la frase al lado derecho:

add seller to favorites
add item to favorites

Puedes dar solamente un corazón a nivel tienda. Y dentro de la tienda puedes dar corazones a cuanto producto gustes.

Lista de los deseos
Este proceso de dar corazones formará dos lista: una para tiendas y otra para los artículos que hayas marcado como favoritos.
Puedes marca un artículo sin necesidad de marcar la tienda. Y viceversa.

lo que puedes compartir como la lista de tus deseos ( próximo cumpleaños, aniversario, ocasión especial o simplemente porque sí... y te lo mereces)
o puedes optar mantenerla en privado.

Si optas por mantener esta lista en privado, no podrás compartirla, las tiendas a las cuales marques como favoritas tan solo verán que un " admirador secreto" les ha marcado y/o dado un corazón

Todo está en la ubicación

Otras de los puntos relevantes en un perfil Etsy es la ubicacion. De dónde y así adónde.
Esto es importante para el vendedor, quien quiere estar informado sobre hacia donde van sus productos, quienes conforman su clientela, para de esa forma ofrecer y mejorar sus ofertas.

Como comprador esto te ubicara, dejandote saber desde donde vienen los productos que vas comprando.

Soy Alejandra y mi empresa de joyería es 2212jewelry, nací en buenos aires y vivo en esta ciudad, toda la vida me ha gustado viajar y he recorrido muchos lugares, pero yo sigo buscando un lugar para mi que aun no lo encontrado del todo, mientras tanto es aquí, en buenos aires.

Tell us who you are, where do you live, something special about you ...

I’m Alejandra and my jewelry business is 2212 jewelry, born in Buenos Aires, and I have lived in this city all my life. I love to travel, I’ve visited lots of places, but I still searching for a place to call my own, haven’t quite find it. In the meantime I’m here: in Buenos Aires.

¿Cuándo y como empezaste a crear tus joyas?

Estudie psicología al terminar el secundario y hasta hoy sigo ejerciendo la profesión. Paralelamente siempre el arte ocupo un lugar muy importante en mi vida, en 1983 comencé a tomar clases de pintura (luego de una infancia y adolescencia llena de cursos y escuelas de arte, teatro y música) y pinte mucho hasta que en 2003 cuando conocí la joyería contemporánea. Me enamore de ella. El fuego, los metales las texturas llenaron todas mis necesidades y expectativas de creación y me aboque totalmente a crear joyas.
Hace un año hemos abierto con mi pareja (el es joyero colombiano) una escuela de joyería en nuestro taller donde compartimos todo lo que sabemos con los alumnos.

When and how did you start creating your jewelry?

I studied Psychology right after High School and until today I being in the practice. At the same time art always had have a very special place in my life, in 1983 I began a painting course ( after a childhood and teenage years full of Art School and art courses, theater and music) I painted a lot until 2003 when I came across contemporary jewelry. I fell in love. The fire, the metals, and the temperatures felt all my creative needs and expectations, falling head-in A year ago we opened with my partner ( a Colombian jewelry-maker) a jewelry school in our studio, where we share all that we have learned to our students.

¿Cómo es tu proceso creativo? ¿Qué es lo que te inspira?

Me inspiran diferentes cosas, desde paisajes, la naturaleza, olores, colores, imágenes, sueños, a veces solo el disfrute de trabajar con el metal. La improvisación tiene mucho que ver en mi proceso creativo ya que en mi mente se disparan muchas imágenes al mismo tiempo y a veces debo trabajar en 3 o 4 piezas a la vez por que vienen a mi imágenes completamente opuestas que no podría plasmar en una sola pieza. Tengo en mi mesa de noche papel y lápiz por que me surgen ideas permanentemente.

What about your creative process? What inspires you?

I get inspiration from many different things; from landscapes, nature, colors, scents, images, to dreams and sometimes just by joy of working with metal. Improvisation has a lot to do with the process of creating, because my mind shots me many images, all at the same time and many times I have to work on 3 to 4 pieces at once. All because the images came to me, completely opposite and unrelated among each other, and they could not be expressed in one piece. I have on my night table pencil and paper because the ideas do not stop coming.

Si, vendo por mi pagina de Internet, por galerías virtuales y por tiendas en buenos aires y otras provincias

Are you selling your creations somewhere else besides Etsy?

Yes, I sell them on my webpage, on virtual galleries and in shops in Buenos Aires and other provinces.

Háblanos de tus gustos

Soy muy ecléctica, he hecho varias cosas en mi vida y soy muy curiosa. Me fascina bucear, soy buzo de rescate desde hace muchos años, los colores debajo del agua, los sonidos y las imágenes me encantan.
He estudiado (además de psicoanálisis) Etología animal, que es el estudio del comportamiento en animales, y he trabajado con un veterinario ayudando a animalitos con problemas de conducta ( al estilo del popular encantador de perros).
Me gusta también la fotografía, un poco la tecnología. Viajar sin duda y conocer otras culturas, me encanta saber de las costumbres de otras mujeres en otras latitudes.
Otra pasión es el Cine.

Tell us about your tastes

I am very eclectic, I have done a variety of things throughout my life and I am very curious. I love diving: I am a certified rescue diver for a few now; the colors, the sounds and the images underwater have captured me.
I have studied ( beside Psychoanalysis) Animal Ethology: the study of animal behavior, and I have worked as a Veterinarian helping little animals with behavioral problems, in the very popular show The Dog Whisperer.
I like Photography, its techniques. I love to travel and to know about other cultures, I love to learn about customs women have in other latitudes. An other passion is filmmaking.

Many!!! and a few that have enchanted me since forever. “Top of the worl” by Hans Ruesch ( from childhood), “Beauty and Sadness” by Kawabata, “El amante” by M. Duras, “Silk” by Baricco, “When Nietzsche Wept” by I. Yalom, “La soledad era esto” by Millas and a few more from him.
And lately “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan” By Lisa See, “A Thousand Splendid Suns” by Khaled Hosseini, “The Final Meeting” by Sandor Marai and many others.

¿Música?

Muchisima también!! sobre todo la música que me acompaña, ecléctica también desde Manu Chao hasta Air, pasando por los clásicos Beattles, The Cure, Gabriel, Blur, Café Tacuba, Marisa Monte, Morcheeba, musica africana, asiatica y algunas argentinos como Juana Molina o Budda Sounds

Music?

Plenty as well, specially the music that keeps me company. Eclectic too, from Manu Chao to Air, going through the classics: Beatles, The Cure, Gabriel, Blur, Café Tacuba, Marisa Monte, Morcheeba, African Music, Asian Music, and a few Argentineans such as Juana Molina or Budda Sounds.
